about

One of my favorite lyric texts of a hymn. Written in 1883, this classic hymn explores the great mystery of God's love and grace that He extends to His children. While we may not know all the answers to hows and whys of God's purposes, we can be convinced of those things He has revealed (Deut 29:29) and can say with confidence with Timothy that we are convinced that He is able to guard what has been entrusted to Him. I decided to write a new tune to this hymn because I was never a fan of the tune that most associate it with.

I Know Whom I Have Believed by Daniel W. Whittle music by Eric Graef

I know not why God’s wondrous grace
To me He hath made known,
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
Redeemed me for His own.

I know not how this saving faith
to me He did impart,
Nor how believing in His Word
Wrought peace within my heart.

But I know Whom I’ve believed in
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
till that day.
I know not how the Spirit moves,
Convincing men of sin,
Revealing Jesus through the Word,
Creating faith in Him.
I know not what of good or ill
May be reserved for me,
Of weary ways or golden days,
Before His face I see
But I know Whom I’ve believed in
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
till that day.
I know not when my Lord may come,
At night or noonday fair,
Nor if I walk the vale with Him,
Or meet Him in the air.
But I know Whom I’ve believed in
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
till that day.
